Volunteer Behavioral Health Care System recently launched MyRecovery, a social networking site aimed at virtually helping people who would normally see a therapist in person. Such a site could open the door to more therapy services being offered online, changing the role of family and other therapists.

MyRecovery was developed in and effort to offer more therapy options to patients who live in rural communities throughout Tennessee, where VBHCS is located. The site is being funded by a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

MyRecovery is specifically aimed at supporting people who are recovering from addiction and other disorders. Through the site's e-therapy program, users will be able to interact with their peers through private and group chats, blogs, and personal profiles.

"We incorporate three evidence-based models to increase engagement into services, offer hope in recovery and provide recovery skills via web-based chat rooms and blogs," VBHCS notes. "Using Motivational Interviewing and the Stages of Change Model as well as peer-to-peer recovery concepts, the program model is grounded in strong practice strategies that will ensure positive outcomes for those being served."

Initially, MyRecovery will only be available to patients who are discharged from VBHCS's New Leaf Recovery Program. However, the organization plans to open the site to more people during the next few years.

In addition, MyRecovery will act as a screening tool for patients who may have certain disorders. This will help lighten the load at New Leaf Recovery Center, where more than 150 people are typically on the waiting list for therapy services.

Oncology Jobs Supported by New Medical Research Center

EMD Serono recently opened a new research center in Billerica, a nearby suburb of Boston. The new facility will be used to develop and discover innovative treatments in oncology, neurodegenerative diseases, and infertility.

The research center is expected to create about 100 new jobs and attract a total of 200 scientists with experience in cancer biology, cancer immunotherapy, oncogene signaling, medicinal chemistry, molecular modeling, protein engineering, therapeutic antibodies, and manufacturing cell lines.

"This research expansion represents EMD Serono's clear purpose of scientific and medical innovation, and solidifies the company's presence in Massachusetts as a leading, global organization in the life sciences industry," Fereydoun Firouz, president and CEO of EMD Serono, said in a statement. "We are focused on retaining and attracting the best scientists to develop therapies that provide value and breakthrough solutions to people living with serious medical conditions such as fertility disorders, cancer and neurodegenerative diseases."

The new $65 million facility will measure about 140,000 square feet, including chemistry and screening labs, biology and cell culture labs, general lab support space, offices and conference rooms, and mechanical space. EMD Serono is currently looking to earn a LEED Gold certification for the facility.

The location of EMD Serono's new facility will allow the company to maintain its existing relationships and partnerships with many area institutions, research organizations, hospitals, and healthcare institutions.

"The research institute in Billerica will bring together EMD Serono scientists, researchers and stakeholders in our research network which allows for greater synergy, collaboration and development of innovative science," Dr. Bernhard Kirschbaum, executive vice president of research and development for Merck Serono, said in a statement.

"In addition, the establishment of EMD Serono's research facility center of excellence in Massachusetts provides an opportunity to tap into world-renowned academic and research institutions that are located in close proximity to our new facility in order to further collaborate with a common objective to drive science forward," he added.

EMD Serono and Merck Serono are both affiliates of pharmaceutical and chemical company Merck KGaA. The company operates three other research centers in Germany, Switzerland, and China.

Non for Profit Jobs Get Less Government Funding During Recession

How did the economic downturn effect the state of non for profit jobs (Click here)?

That was the question posed by "Human Service Nonprofits and Government Collaboration," a recent report from the Urban Institute based on findings from the 2010 National Survey of Nonprofit Government Contracting and Grants.

Many nonprofit organizations receive a large portion of their funding from the government, and because the government was having its own funding problems during the economic recession, several organizations had to reduce services and cut jobs in order to stay afloat.

The report takes an in-depth look at the contracts and grants the government has with nonprofits, as well as how those organizations were affected by the recession, how they dealt with declining revenues, and how their relationships with the government affected their budget problems.

Key findings of the report include:

Government agencies have about 200,000 contracts and grants with about 33,000 nonprofits.
Government funding accounts for more than 65 percent of those organizations' total revenue.
Of the nonprofits with government agreements, 60 percent consider those contracts to be their largest source of funding.
About 64 percent of organizations said their experience with the government was the same in 2009 as in previous years, while 31 percent said it was worse, and only 5 percent said it was better.
About 68 percent of nonprofits said they had a problem with the government not paying the full cost of their contract and 53 percent said they were receiving late payments.
More than 50 percent of organizations saw declining revenues from state government, donations, and investments.
About 42 percent of nonprofits ended 2009 with a deficit, causing 50 percent of those to freeze or reduce salaries, 39 percent to use reserves, 38 percent to make layoffs, 23 percent to reduce benefits, 22 percent to use more credit, 21 percent to reduce services, and 17 percent to serve fewer people.

Job Openings in Tampa Florida Decline

Although the local economy is slowly recovering from the economic downturn, job openings in Tampa Florida are still hard to come by.

During January, the Tampa area's unemployment rate increased from 12 percent to 12.4 percent, after dropping from 12.7 percent during December 2010. That increase keeps the area's rate well above the national average at the time of 9 percent.

The Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater area employed about 1,109,300 workers during January, which is down from 1,122,300 workers during December, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. However, that's still a .3 percent increase from last year.

Every industry lost jobs during January, with the exception of mining and logging, which held steady with 400 workers. The trade, transportation, and utilities industry saw the biggest drop in employment, losing 4,900 jobs over the month.

Other industries that saw an over-the-month decrease in employment include:

Professional and business services - 2,500 jobs
Education and health services - 1,800 jobs
Construction - 1,300 jobs
Other services - 800 jobs
Leisure and hospitality - 700 jobs
Manufacturing - 400 jobs
Government - 300 jobs
Information - 200 jobs
Financial activities - 100 jobs

When compared to last year, however, five industries managed to see an increase in employment. The education and health services industry experienced the biggest growth, increasing by 2.6 percent between January 2010 and January 2011.

In addition, the leisure and hospitality industry grew by 1.3 percent, while the professional and business services industry increased by 1.1 percent; the government industry grew by .5 percent; and the trade, transportation, and utilities industry increased by .3 percent.

Customer Service Jobs Phoenix at New PayPal Center

A fast-growing company is increasing the number of customer service jobs Phoenix has.

PayPal recently opened a new customer service center in Chandler, a nearby suburb of Phoenix. The new 188,000-square-foot facility is expected to eventually create about 2,000 jobs in Chandler and bring plenty of revenue to the local economy.

The company has already hired more than 500 employees at the new center and expects to hire another 1,500 by the end of the year. These jobs are in everything from sales careers Chandler to customer service to technology and will focus on supporting PayPal's growth.

"PayPal is growing at a phenomenal rate," PayPal President Scott Thompson said in a statement. "Last year we set a new record for the business, adding one million new customers a month. To support this growth, we have added dedicated teams here in Chandler – including customer service, operations, training, technology and management – to serve our customers across North America, in our burgeoning market in Mexico and as far away as Australia."

Part of the reason that PayPal chose to open its new location in Chandler is that the company already has a strong presence in the area. Most notably, PayPal operates a technology center in Scottsdale that supports the company's product development, infrastructure design, and engineering.

"PayPal is a very welcome addition to Chandler and the region on many levels," Chandler Mayor Jay Tibshraeny said. "From job creation and the diversification of the city's business base to PayPal's excellent reputation as a quality employer, we are excited to have them join Chandler in the Price Corridor."

Nursing Jobs in Arizona Created by New Rehab Center

A new rehab center will create hundreds of nursing jobs in Arizona.

Scottsdale Healthcare is planning to partner with Global Rehab to open a new inpatient rehab hospital in Scottsdale. Once completed, the new facility will increase the number of healthcare jobs Scottsdale has by about 120, and bring in about $8.3 million in payroll.

The two-story hospital will measure about 55,000 square feet and will cost about $17 million to build. The rehab center will be used to treat patients who need rehab after suffering stroke, hip fracture, neurological disorder, brain injury, spinal cord injury, traumatic injury, and other complex medical conditions.

Although the exact location of the hospital has yet to be revealed, officials say it will be located in Scottsdale between all three existing Scottsdale Healthcare hospitals and easily accessed from Loop 101. The hospital is currently slated to open in mid-2012.

Physicians and staff who work for Scottsdale Healthcare will help design the facility, and physicians will be able to invest in the structure of the building as limited partners through the Cirrus Group.

"Scottsdale Healthcare is committed to working with leading physicians in the community," Tom Sadvary, president and CEO of Scottsdale Healthcare, said in a statement. "We believe that physicians and hospitals achieve the best outcomes when they operate as teams, and this new venture illustrates our commitment to clinical integration for seamless healthcare delivery along the entire continuum of care."

Denver Finance Jobs Suffer from Bank Closures

Denver finance jobs (Click here) have not seen a good start to the new year.

Although the state avoided any major fallout during the banking crisis of 2010, two banks with large operations in Colorado have failed already this year, including Denver-based United Western Bank and Louisville-based FirsTier Bank.

United Western Bank was the first to close on January 21st, marking the first and largest bank failure in Colorado since 2009, according to the Denver Business Journal. That year the state saw three other banks fail, including: Colorado National Bank, Southern Colorado National Bank, and New Frontier Bank.

Next came the closure of FirstTier Bank on January 28th. That move was made after a review by the Colorado Division of Banking and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation found that the bank would need $10.6 million to reach an appropriate loan-loss reserve level.

Once it was determined the bank would close, the FDIC created the Deposit Insurance National Bank of Louisville, which will remain open until February 28th so customers can access their deposits and open accounts with other institutions.

This is all bad news for the local and statewide financial industry, which has added some jobs in recent months, but continues to suffer losses caused by the economic downturn.

The Denver-Aurora-Broomfield area's financial activities industry employed 90,400 workers during December, which is up from 89,700 workers during November, but a 2.3 percent decrease from the previous year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Throughout Colorado as a whole, the financial activities industry employed 141,400 workers during December, which is down from 142,300 workers during November and a 2.1 percent decrease when compared to December 2009.

San Antonio Jobs Created by Mercury Retail Services

A local company with a strong national presence is looking to create hundreds of San Antonio jobs (Click here).

Mercury Retail Services recently announced that it plans to hire about 500 people this year. The majority of the available jobs are for labor-intensive positions such as route drivers, but there are some openings for management, administrative, and clerical jobs.

About 200 of the new positions will be in San Antonio, where the company is headquartered, while the majority of the remaining job openings will be in other offices throughout Texas. A small number of the positions will be at Mercury offices in other parts of the country.

"We are a growing company," Trey Holder, president and CEO of Mercury Retail Services, told the San Antonio Express-News. "But when you look at how (the job surge) is impacting San Antonio directly, it's that we're a company that is moving out nationally."

Mercury provides merchandising, stocking, sign placement, and inventory services for print publications. The company's clients include such notable names as Walmart, H-E-B, Target, and Walgreens. Mercury currently employs about 1,600 people.

The additional jobs are good news for the San Antonio area's local economy, which has grown compared to last year, but continues to lose jobs on a monthly basis. During November, the area had an unemployment rate of 7.6 percent.

The San Antonio-New Braunfels area employed 838,800 workers during December, which is down from 840,400 workers during November, but a .8 percent increase from the previous year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Houston Healthcare Jobs See Second-Largest Growth

Houston healthcare jobs and education jobs experienced the second-largest yearly increase in employment at the end of last year, falling second only to the mining and logging industry.

Texas's unemployment rate increased during December, but only slightly, from 8.2 percent to 8.3 percent. Even so, that rate is still lower than the national average of 9.4 percent. The Houston area had an unemployment rate of 8.6 percent during November.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown area employed a total of 2,542,600 workers during December, which is up from 2,534,500 workers during November and a .5 percent increase from the previous year.

The majority of industries added workers at the end of 2010. The trade, transportation, and utilities industry by far created the most jobs, adding 6,900 employees during December.

Six other industries saw a monthly increase in employment, including: leisure and hospitality by 900 jobs; mining and logging by 800 jobs; education and health services by 600 jobs; construction by 500 jobs; manufacturing by 400 jobs; and information by 100 jobs.

Employment in the financial activities industry remained even over the month with 136,700 jobs. The professional and business services, other services, and government industries all lost workers during December.

On a yearly basis, the mining and logging industry experienced the biggest employment growth, increasing by 5.1 percent to 92,200 workers. That was followed by the education and health services industry, which grew by 2.8 percent to 311,600 jobs.

The leisure and hospitality industry increased by 2 percent to 234,500 workers, while the manufacturing industry grew by 1.6 percent to 221,500 jobs, and the other services industry increased by 1 percent to 91,500 workers.

Industries that saw an over-the-year decrease in employment during December include:

Several cities in the East Valley have teamed up to create the East Valley Aviation and Aerospace Alliance, an effort among businesses and local governments aimed at promoting the East Valley as a top location for aerospace and related defense industries.

Mesa, Gilbert, Queen Creek, Chandler, and Scottsdale are all part of the new nonprofit alliance. The effort is expected to retain and expand the current $3.5 billion annual economic impact that aerospace businesses have on the local economy.

"We have a long-standing relationship with the defense industry that goes back to World War II," Roc Arnett, who helped form the East Valley Aviation and Aerospace Alliance, told The Arizona Republic. "These competing states recognize that, and they are coming after us."

The alliance will solely focus on businesses and governments in the Easy Valley. Those involved are currently forming a board to oversee the alliance, and the membership fees paid by the directors appointed to that board will finance the alliance's operations.

"I think we finally have the attention of state and regional leaders that this is a sector that could be lost if we're not paying attention," Steven Zylstra, president and CEO of the Arizona Technology Council, said. "My view is that there is a heightened awareness more than there has ever been, and I think people get it."

San Diego Jobs with SeaWorld Cut

SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment recently announced that it will eliminate 350 jobs as part of a company-wide restructuring effort. This round of job cuts, which is the first in two decades for the company, will result in about 80 layoffs at SeaWorld San Diego.

Denver Medical Jobs Increase .9 Percent Over the Year

That month the Denver-Aurora-Broomfield area's unemployment rate increased from 8.4 percent to 8.5 percent after remaining steady for two months in a row. Despite the latest increase, the area's rate is still lower than the national average of 9.7 percent.

The Denver area had a total non-farm employment of 1,162,200 workers during March, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is up from 1,155,500 workers during February, but a 2.9 percent decrease from last year.

Six industries managed to see a monthly increase in employment, including: mining, logging and construction by 1,100 jobs; financial activities by 400 jobs; professional and business services by 2,200 jobs; leisure and hospitality by 2,400 jobs; other services by 200 jobs; and government by 1,200 jobs.

Employment in the information industry remained even over the month with 44,900 jobs.

Three industries managed to see a yearly increase in employment, with the education and health services industry adding the most workers, even though some jobs were lost over the month. The industry employed 138,100 workers during March, down from 138,600 workers during February, but a .9 percent increase from March 2009.

Baltimore Education Jobs Available

While many schools across the country are being forced to eliminate teaching positions because of the economy and new educational standards, some Baltimore education jobs are actually available.

At the end of April, Baltimore County officials held their annual job fair for teaching applicants at the Timonium Fairgrounds. This year, about 3,000 people showed up for the job fair during the first few hours alone, according to WBAL.

The competition among job seekers was tough, with some applicants coming from places where employment opportunities are few and far between. However, many candidates stated that simply having a job was more important than choosing a particular position.

Organizers of the job fair said several applicants had returned to school for teaching in an effort to change careers, while some of the candidates were more experienced in the profession, and others were still in school.

Aside from the various teaching jobs available, Baltimore County officials have noted that other positions in healthcare and government also are open. However, it's no wonder that so many people are looking for teaching jobs, as the industry continues to thrive.

The Baltimore-Towson area's education and health services industry employed 239,400 workers during March, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is up from 237,300 workers during April and a 2.2 percent increase from last year.

The education and health services industry throughout Maryland as a whole employed 399,200 workers during March, up from 394,100 workers during February and a 1.9 percent increase from March 2009.

More jobs in Oregon were lost during March as the state's unemployment rate increased.

During March, Oregon's unemployment rate increased from 10.5 percent to 10.6 percent, following a decrease from 10.7 percent during February. That increase keeps the state's rate higher than the national average of 9.7 percent.

Oregon had a total non-farm employment of 1,590,400 workers during March, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 1,590,800 workers during February and a 2.3 percent decrease from last year.

Five industries managed to see a monthly increase in employment during March, including: manufacturing by 1,100 jobs; trade, transportation and utilities by 400 jobs; professional and business services by 600 jobs; leisure and hospitality by 400 jobs; and government by 600 jobs.

Only one industry managed to see a yearly increase in employment. The education and health services industry employed 223,800 workers during March, down from 224,800 workers during February, but a .8 percent increase from March 2009.

The construction industry took the biggest hit when compared to last year. The industry employed 63,700 workers during March, down from 64,000 workers during February and a 16.4 percent decrease from last year.

As the state unemployment rate continued to inch upward and more jobs were lost, Nevada medical jobs and education jobs were the only industry to increase over the year during March.

During March, Nevada's unemployment rate increased from 13.2 percent to 13.4 percent, after remaining at 13 percent for two months in a row. That increase keeps the state's rate above the national average of 9.7 percent.

Nevada had a total non-farm employment of 1,115,600 workers during March, according to the U.S Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 1,122,700 workers during February and a 4.6 percent decrease from last year.

Four industries managed to see a monthly increase in employment, including: mining and logging by 100 jobs; trade, transportation and utilities by 200 jobs; leisure and hospitality by 1,100 jobs; and other services by 200 jobs.

Employment in the manufacturing industry remained even over the month with 38,700 jobs. Only one industry managed to see a yearly increase in employment.

The education and health services industry employed 99,900 workers during March, down from 100,200 workers during February, but a 4 percent increase from March 2009.

Although the Austin area's March unemployment rate has not yet been released, the rate throughout Texas remained at 8.2 percent for the fifth month in a row, which is lower than the national unemployment rate of 9.7 percent. Austin had an unemployment rate of 7.3 percent during February.

The Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos area had a total non-farm employment of 760,300 workers during March, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is up from 755,700 workers during February, but a .1 percent decrease from last year.

Seven industries managed to see a monthly increase in employment, including: manufacturing by 300 jobs; trade, transportation and utilities by 1,000 jobs; financial activities by 200 jobs; education and health services by 500 jobs; leisure and hospitality by 2,100 jobs; other services by 400 jobs; and government by 1,400 jobs.

Four industries managed to see a yearly increase in employment, with the leisure and hospitality industry growing the most. The industry employed 87,900 workers during March, up from 85,800 workers during February and a 7.3 percent increase from March 2009.

The education and health services industry saw the second-largest increase. The industry employed 85,200 workers during March, up from 84,700 workers during February and a 3.3 percent increase from last year.

The government industry employed 171,600 workers during March, up from 170,200 workers during March and a 1.7 percent increase from March 2009. The other services industry employed 33,600 workers during March, up from 33,200 workers during February and a .6 percent increase from last year.

Employment in the financial activities industry remained even over the year with 43,700 jobs.

The mining, logging and construction industry took the biggest hit when compared to last year. The industry employed 38,400 workers during March, down from 39,000 workers during February and a 7.2 percent decrease from March 2009.

Houston Teaching Jobs Cut

Hundreds of Houston teaching jobs (Click here) have been put on the chopping block.

School districts throughout Houston and Fort Bend are planning to cut more than 880 jobs for teachers and other employees. Although any displaced employees have the option of applying for other positions within the districts, there's no guarantee they'll be hired.

"We will work very hard to interview all of them as quickly as possible," Terry Grier, superintendent at Houston Independent School District, told the Houston Chronicle, adding that principals and department leaders won't be forced to hire those employees, but they will be considered before other applicants.

HISD voted April 8 to fire Principal Mable Caleb, five other administrators and teachers who were involved in a scheme to cover up dropouts by tagging them as transfers, and 170 other employees to save $4.8 million. The district is looking to cut about $7 million from its overall budget.

This last group of employers includes teachers, counselors, nurses, curriculum specialists and teacher-training staff. These layoffs come after HISD already cut about 240 other positions in regional offices and federally-funded posts.

The personnel cuts are mainly the result of a reorganization of the district's administration and several departments, including professional development, alternative certification and services for hospitalized, institutionalized and sick students at home.

The Fort Bend Independent School District - which, facing a $20 million deficit, has declared a financial emergency - is planning to cut 470 jobs, including 100 positions for special education teachers.

"The district's goal is to be able to offer the opportunity to as many teachers as possible to return to work in the district," FBISD Spokeswoman Mary Ann Simpson said in a statement.

Arizona Unemployment Tax Could Increase

Many business groups are asking employers to pay more for Arizona unemployment benefits.

Along with several other states, Arizona began borrowing money in March, when the state's trust fund that pays for the benefits was used up. That fund is provided by taxes that employers pay.

There are currently about 170,000 Arizona residents who collect unemployment benefits, which is an increase from the 25,000 residents who did so during December 2008, according to the Arizona Department of Economic Security.

As of March, 33 states had borrowed a total of $38.2 billion from the federal government to help pay for unemployment benefits, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

The Arizona House of Representatives Commerce Committee is now looking at new legislation that would require employers to pay a $42 per-employee assessment in 2011 and 2012. That fee would be above the state tax employers already owe for unemployment benefits.

According to The Associated Press, the assessment fee would help pay for future borrowing from the federal government and save employers money over time. At the same time, automatic adjustments from the program's increasing costs will raise the current unemployment tax from $146 per employee per year to $158 in 2011 and $161 in 2012.

Unfortunately, those increases won't provide enough money to begin repaying the federal government in time to avoid a large tax increase that could be imposed in 2012. Other options being considered include a permanent tax increase and earlier implementation of the assessment.

San Antonio Construction Jobs Supported By Funding

A new round of funding will help to support San Antonio construction jobs (Click here).

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently announced that it will award $480,669 in stimulus funding for three Texas companies to perform work at the San Marcos National Fish Hatchery & Technology Center. The funding is from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

According to the San Antonio Business Journal, San Antonio-based SK Quality Custom Builders will receive $335,208 of that funding to build new office space, storage space and research bays at NFHTC's current greenhouse. The greenhouse will then be used to cultivate and conduct research on the endangered Texas wild rice.

SK Quality Custom Builders also will install a new chain link fence along the driveways that lead to the holding house, which will prevent anyone from accidentally falling off the steep embankments. The company will further repair a waste water drain line that is currently blocked.

Kempner-based Seneca Construction Management LLC will receive $130,000 of the funding to replace the air-sourced heating and cooling system in the NFHTC's office and laboratory building. The company also will install new energy-efficient lighting fixtures and rehabilitate the shop building's electrical system.

Houston-based Kimrick Performance Group LLC will receive $15,461 of the funding to increase security at NFHTC's McCarty well pump house. As part of this effort, the company will install more secure doors and take other security measures.

These new projects will surely be welcome news to San Antonio's construction industry. The construction industry has suffered both locally and nationally as a result of the economic downturn, but appears to be picking up in various spots throughout the country.

The San Antonio-New Braunfels area's construction industry employed 44,700 workers during February, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is up from 44,600 workers during January, but an 8.8 percent decrease from last year.

During 2009, the average pay for employees in the St. Louis area declined by 7 cents from 2008, according to the National Compensation Survey from the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics.

As of July 2009, employees in St. Louis earned an average salary of $21.33 per hour, which is down from $21.40 during July 2008. As of February, the national average salary for workers in all businesses and industries came in at $22.46 per hour.

In St. Louis, engineering managers were among the highest paid employees last year, earning an average $51.83 per hour. All management employees earned an average salary of $43.08 per hour, while healthcare employees earned an average of $27.13 per hour.

On the other end of the scale, retail employees earned one of the lowest salaries, bringing in only $11.62 per hour. The average wage for a cashier, one of the most popular retail occupations, in the St. Louis area was $9.91 per hour.

During February, the unemployment rate in St. Louis increased from 10.7 percent to 11 percent, following an increase from 9.8 percent during January. The latest increase keeps the city's unemployment rate above the national average of 9.7 percent.

St. Louis had a total non-farm employment of 1,265,500 workers during February, according to the BLS. This is up from 1,262,800 workers during January, but a 2.5 percent decrease from last year.

San Antonio Nurse Jobs Training Gets Funding

A new round of funding will help prepare students for San Antonio nurse jobs, as well as provide funding for other career-related initiatives.

Texas Comptroller Susan Combs recently announced that she would award $6.37 million in equipment and job-training grants to nonprofit organizations and schools. The funding will be used to train more people for careers in high-demand occupations.

Two local entities will benefit from that funding. Alamo Colleges will receive $61,754 through a grant from the Alamo Community College District Foundation to support the school's distance learning licensed vocational nurse to registered nurse initiative.

In addition, Project Quest will receive $980,000 to support multiple job training programs in San Antonio, Dallas and the South Plains region. Of that funding, Project Quest will invest $180,000 in the San Antonio area.

A total of 17 colleges throughout Texas will receive more than $3.51 million in Job Building Fund grants and 10 nonprofit organizations will receive more than $2.86 million in Launchpad Funds.

Texas is using the Job Building Fund to help schools purchase equipment in order to train individuals for high-demand careers. The Launchpad Funds were awarded to support nonprofit organizations that help students fill high-paying jobs.

"We're using the Job Building Fund to help schools purchase cutting-edge equipment needed for high-demand career and technical education programs, training students for high-growth industries throughout the state in an era of rapidly increasing enrollment," Combs said. "With the Launchpad Funds, priority was given to organizations whose students are expected to graduate and find jobs paying salaries equal to or greater than the prevailing wage for high-demand occupations in the region."

Atlanta manufacturing jobs saw the second-largest yearly decrease in employment at the beginning of 2010.

Although Atlanta's January unemployment rate has not yet been released, the unemployment rate in Georgia as a whole increased from 10.3 percent to 10.4 percent, keeping it above the national rate of 9.7 percent. Atlanta had an unemployment rate of 10.1 percent during December 2009.

The Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta area had a total non-farm employment of 2,236,700 workers during January, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 2,264,800 workers during January and a 4 percent decrease from last year.

Only two industries managed to see a monthly increase in employment, including education and health services by 2,600 jobs and government by 100 jobs. The education and health services industry also was the only industry that saw a yearly increase in employment.

The industry employed 271,800 workers during January, up from 269,200 workers during December and a 1.4 percent increase from January 2009.

The construction industry took the biggest hit when compared to last year. The industry employed 90,600 workers during January, down from 94,700 workers during December and an 18 percent decrease from last year.

Phoenix Tech Jobs Get New Space

A local nonprofit will soon offer a space for those with Phoenix tech jobs (Click here) to come together.

The nearby City of Chandler recently announced that it plans to offer $400,000 to Gangplank, a technology-oriented nonprofit. The funding will help redevelop a historic building, accounting for the first project under the South Arizona Avenue Design Guidelines.

Gangplank provides a collaborative space where hundreds of technology-oriented professionals can come together to share ideas and develop products and business models. The company is working in Chandler because it has many of the ingredients to attract people in technology.

"For good ideas to take off, they have to build off other ideas," Gangplank Co-Founder Derek Neighbors told the East Valley Tribune. "We need density. Downtown Chandler is doing everything right to set itself up for the creative class in the next 10 years or so."

The company plans to renovate a building on South Arizona Avenue across from the new City Hall. Gangplank will use the funding for exterior facade renovations and to bring the ventilation system up to code.

The funding will come from a city fund meant to help private developers restore downtown buildings. In exchange for providing the funding, the city will receive a conservation easement guaranteeing the historic aspects of the building will be preserved and maintained for 20 years.

Gangplank will invest some of its own funding to add a second story to the building and renovate the interior. The building, which dates back to 1946, was originally used by the military and later became a meat processing plant, retail suites and home to the Gospel for Life Church.

The South Arizona Avenue Design Guidelines are aimed at creating an urban, pedestrian-friendly city center with tall buildings on each side of Arizona Avenue, transitioning downward to blend into adjacent residential neighborhoods.

The guidelines help support the $10 million South Arizona Avenue Corridor Area Plan, which will narrow Arizona Avenue from six lanes to four through Dr. A.J. Chandler Park and widen sidewalks to enhance the area's landscaping.

Raleigh Medical Jobs Supported by CHIPRA Funding

A new round of funding will help support Raleigh medical jobs that focus on children.

The State of North Carolina recently announced that it will receive a $9.3 million grant through the Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act to develop technology that tracks and measures quality of care for children.

The NC Department of Health and Human Services, North Carolina Pediatric Society, and NC Office of Rural Health and Community Care worked together to secure the grant.

"This competitive grant is vital to ensuring that children in our state are healthy and ready to learn," Gov. Bev Perdue said. "This will help pediatric offices throughout the state make better use of technology so we can be sure that children, those with special needs in particular, are receiving the care they need."

Only 10 lead states received part of the $100 million in funding from CHIPRA. North Carolina plans to apply its funding toward three initiatives for youth who receive healthcare through NC Medicaid or N.C. Health Choice for Children.

Those initiatives include:

Improve coordinated care for Children with Special Health Care Needs, focusing on children with developmental, behavioral and mental-health disorders. The effort will help narrow the gaps and disparities that special-needs children frequently encounter.
Implement electronic health records for children.
Implement and establish measures to increase the quality of care for children. Funding will be given to Community Care of North Carolina to create and evaluate methods for collecting and reporting data on health indicators specific to children.

"This will be a great opportunity for us to truly implement medical home standards and to coordinate care for kids, especially the ones who have special needs," Dr. Marian Earls, president of the N.C. Pediatric Society, said. "The focus now is on shifting to electronic patient records, and to integrate quality into practice, and this grant will help us move in that direction."

Job Search Hope Among Unemployment Figures

Anyone in the midst of a job search received some good news today.

The U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the national unemployment rate declined from 10 percent to 9.7 percent during January. However, another 20,000 jobs were lost during the month.

The total number of unemployed people decreased to 14.8 million during January. Teenagers saw the biggest unemployment rate, at 26.4 percent, followed by blacks at 16.5 percent, Hispanics at 12.6 percent, adult men at 10 percent, Whites at 8.7 percent, Asians at 8.4 percent and adult women at 7.9 percent.

Gulf War era II veterans had an unemployment rate of 12.6 percent, while non-veterans had a rate of 10.4 percent. People with a disability had a 15.2 percent unemployment rate, compared with 10.4 percent for those with no disability. Foreign-born people had an unemployment rate of 11.8 percent, while native-born people had a 10.3 percent rate.

The construction industry lost 75,000 jobs during January, with nonresidential specialty trade contractors losing 48,000 workers, accounting for the majority of the decline. Construction industry employment has declined by 1.9 million workers since December 2007.

Employment in transportation and warehousing decreased by 19,000 workers, mainly due to a 23,000 job loss among couriers and messengers.

After several months of severe declines, employment in the manufacturing industry only dropped by 11,000 workers, mainly because of 23,000 job gains in motor vehicles and parts, and 6,000 job gains in plastics and rubber products.

Temporary help services increased by 52,000 jobs, and has added 247,000 jobs since reaching a low point during September 2009. Retail trade employment increased by 42,000 jobs, mainly due to a 14,000 job gain among food stores, a 13,000 job gain among clothing stores and a 10,000 job gain among general merchandise retailers.

Employment in the federal government increased by 33,000 jobs, including 9,000 temporary positions for the 2010 Census. However, more jobs were lost in state and local governments. Healthcare employment also continued to increase, with ambulatory healthcare services adding 15,000 job over the month.

Those looking for Dallas teaching jobs have hundreds of opportunities to choose from.

The Dallas area is home to 337 public schools, 89 private schools and 38 colleges, according to Wikipedia. Teachers in the area have a low unemployment rate and can expect to be paid relatively well.

The Dallas-Plano-Irving area's education and health services industry employed 255,900 workers during December 2009, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is up from 254,600 workers during November and a 9.4 percent increase from December 2008.

According to Salary.com, the average pay for a public school teacher in Dallas is between $44,292 per year and $58,836 per year.

The majority of public elementary and secondary schools in the city are operated by the Dallas Independent School District, which is the 12th-largest school district in the country, with an enrollment of more than 161,000 students.

Several of the district's schools are well-known. During 2006, 2007 and 2009, Newsweek named the School for the Talented and Gifted the best school in the country. The School of Science and Engineering Magnet was named eighth on that list during 2006 and second during 2007. Other schools named to the list include: Hillcrest, W. T. Most school districts in Dallas County, including DISD, are served by Dallas County Schools, a governmental agency that provides busing and other transportation services, access to a media library, technology services, ties to local organizations for education and community integration, and staff development programs.

When it comes to higher-education, there are many notable institutions in the area. Dallas County Community College District serves as the main two-year community college in the county. The district has seven campuses, with branches in Dallas and the surrounding suburbs.

The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, which is part of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and one of the largest grouping of medical facilities in the world, also is located in Dallas. The school is extremely selective, admitting only about 200 students per year and enrolling 3,255 postgraduates.

The city also is home to the University of North Texas at Dallas, which became the first public university in the city in 2009.

There are many private higher-education institutions in the city, including two branches of Texas Woman's University, one that specializes in nursing and one that specializes in occupational therapy and physical therapy.

Other private schools in the city include: Dallas Baptist University, with an enrollment of more than 5,100 students; Paul Quinn College, a historically black college with an enrollment of about 3,000 undergrads; Criswell College, a Biblical and Christian subject school with an enrollment of about 400 students; and Dallas Theological Seminary, an evangelical school with about 2,000 graduate students.
