Biotechnology is usually referred to as genetic engineering technology, but also encompasses procedures used to modify biological organisms according to the needs of humanity. In 1998, Cleveland ranked 18th in the nation with 16,025 biotechnology jobs.

Cleveland is home to BioEnterprise, a business formation, recruitment and acceleration initiative designed to grow health care companies and commercialize bioscience technologies. The founders of the company include The Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals and Case Western Reserve University.

Employees also may be impressed with Cleveland Biotech. Established in 1993, the company provides innovative natural solutions to the growing problems of pollution, particularly those dealing with the discharge of effluents and wastes into the environment. The company is a leader of biomass engineering and currently provides solutions to pollution control problems in the US, UK, Europe, South America, middle and far east and the pacific region.

For those looking ahead to career options, Case Western Reserve University offers an entrepreneurial biotechnology master's degree, which takes 18 months to complete, and is completed through the biology department and Case School of Medicine. The Case School of Medicine is a biomedical research center that currently ranks 12th among the nation's 122 medical schools in research funding. A goldmine for recruiting.

Cleveland State University also offers a business biotechnology certificate.
