Several CT jobs will soon be lost as one large sports company begins cutting positions.

ESPN recently announced that it has begun laying off workers, only four months after the company instituted a hiring freeze. The company maintains that less than 100 workers have lost their jobs so far.

According to an article by The Bristol Press, the layoffs were company-wide, but officials have refused to say whether positions were cut because of job performance.. ESPN says the layoffs will be counter-balanced by new job creation and new initiatives and those who have been laid off will be able to apply for new jobs with the company as they become available.

“We are going to continue to manage our business efficiently, to come out of this business climate as a stronger company,” Soltys added. “We started the process with 3,400 Connecticut jobs. When we are done with our re-purposing, we will have 3,400 Connecticut jobs. Our overall company numbers will be approximately the same, too.”

ESPN employs 5,700 workers throughout the world and 3,400 workers in Connecticut alone. As a response to the current economic downturn, the company has moved some jobs from one department to another.

“Most of the affected positions will be re-purposed for us to grow in the areas such as creating new content or boosting our ad sales staff to increase revenue,” Spokesman Mike Soltys said. “Employees have known for months that changes were coming, but everyone feels compassion for friends and colleagues that were impacted.”

Despite the layoffs, ESPN is continuing construction on a new office building, data center, cafeteria and childcare facility for workers.
