New graduates looking for
Portland jobs should have good luck in the green industry.
A recent report from
Mother Nature Network named
Portland among its list of the Top 10 Cities for New Grads Seeking Green Jobs. This isn't too surprising, as Portland remains the top creator of clean-energy jobs.
Green jobs are continuing to grow throughout the nation, and green-collar industries currently provide 8.5 million jobs across America, according to the
American Solar Energy Society. This is great news for the 80 percent of young professionals who want a green-collar job.
During 2007, Portland was responsible for creating almost 20,000 clean-energy jobs, which is more than any other city in the country and more than 1 percent of the 1.9 million jobs in Oregon that are related to the clean energy economy.
Nearly half of Portland's power now comes from renewable energy sources and the city is currently in the midst of a $50 million project that will result in the planting of 88,000 trees and 43 acres of rooftop projects.
In addition, Portland has been ranked third for providing environmentally-friendly
manufacturing jobs and is consistently named as the most sustainable city in America. No surprise since the city offers 200 miles of walking and bicycling trails, a free light rail, free parking for electric cars, and 50
LEED-certified buildings.
The top 10 cities for green jobs include:
- San Francisco
- Denver
- New York City
- Portland
- Los Angeles
- Sacramento
- Boston
- Detroit
- Phoenix
- Houston
