Dallas Tech Jobs in Occupational Health and Safety

Positions for occupational health and safety technicians are among the most important Dallas tech jobs available.

Occupational health and safety technicians generally work with occupational health and safety specialists to prevent harm to workers, property, the environment, and the public. This is done by implementing and evaluating programs designed to limit risks to workers.

They also may work with specialists to increase worker productivity by reducing absenteeism and equipment downtime, save money by lowering insurance premiums and workers comp payments, and prevent government fines.

Most applicants either attend post-secondary school to earn a certificate or associate degree or gain enough work experience and training to get a job. All employees undergo classroom and on-the-job training to learn the applicable laws and inspection procedures, and may be asked to undergo a Texas records check.

Although it's not required, employees can choose to become credentialed by the Council on Certification of Health, Environmental and Safety Technologists, which may help them advance in their career.

There were roughly 10,900 occupational health and safety technicians throughout the country during 2008, with about 22 percent of those employees working for government agencies. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment should grow by 14 percent by 2018.

Employment in Dallas is expected to increase from 200 workers during 2006 to 250 workers by 2016, resulting in 50 additional jobs and an overall growth rate of 25 percent, according to the Texas Workforce Commission.

Throughout Texas, employment is anticipated to grow from 1,300 workers during 2006 to 1,700 workers by 2016, making for 400 additional jobs and an overall increase of 30.8 percent.

During 2009, the average wage for these employees in Dallas was $23.43 per hour, while the average wage in Texas was $23.71 per hour and the average wage throughout the nation was $22.73 per hour.
