As is the case throughout much of the rest of the nation, San Antonio construction jobs (
Click here) continue to suffer from the lasting effects of the economic recession.
A recent report from the
Associated General Contractors of America found that the
San Antonio-New Braunfels area lost 1,300 construction jobs during August. The area employed 46,400 construction workers during August, which is a 3 percent decrease from 47,700 workers last year.
Throughout the rest of Texas, Houston lost 11,200 construction jobs during August, while Dallas lost 6,700 jobs and Austin lost 300 jobs. Throughout the nation as a whole, 56 of the 337 metropolitan areas included in the report added construction jobs throughout the last year.
"With construction
employment on the mend in an increasing number of areas, it appears that the worst is finally over," AGC Chief Economist Ken Simonson said. "The fact remains, however, that this industry has a long way to go before we see construction employment back to pre-recession levels."
Despite that bit of optimism, unemployment in the construction industry is still almost twice as high as the overall unemployment rat throughout America. That's partly because Congress has continued to delay passing major highway and transit investment legislation.
"The fact that the best news the industry has had in years is that we're not losing jobs as fast as we were is a reflection of how hard hit construction has been during the downturn," AGC CEO Stephen Sandherr said. "Too many construction workers remain unemployed while Congress lets long-delayed infrastructure legislation idle."
