Job in Los Angeles from Federal Rail Funding

Some incoming federal funding may provide some hope to those seeking a job in Los Angeles.

It was recently announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation will award a $20 million TIGER II grant to the City of Los Angeles to make a down payment on a $546 million TIFIA loan. The funding will be used to bolster the city's 30/10 Initiative.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority will use the funding to break ground on the Crenshaw light rail project, which will result in an 8.5 mile connection between the Exposition Line and the Green Line near Los Angeles International Airport.

"This is a great day," Sen. Barbara Boxer said. "The federal government - in partnership with local agencies and the Mayor’s office - is helping to leverage local funding to accelerate creation of thousands of jobs, to speed construction of transportation improvements, and to bring those benefits to the people of LA sooner than would otherwise be possible."

A recent study from the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation found that federal funding will create more than 5,000 jobs, while the entire Crenshaw project is expected to result in more than 15,000 jobs.

The 30/10 Initiative will use long-term revenue from the Measure R sales tax to build 12 mass transit projects in 10 years as opposed to 30. The project will result in hundreds of thousands of jobs, reduce greenhouse emissions, and ease traffic congestion.
