A recent report from
SayCampusLife named marriage and family therapists among the top five psychology career options for 2011. Family therapists were ranked fifth, following school, industrial or organizational, substance abuse and behavioral disorder, and mental health therapists.
People choose a career in psychology for many different reasons, from the idea of helping others to the high pay, so the ideal job may change from person to person. However, some positions are inherently better than others, regardless of why you got into
the field.
The top five psychology career options include:
- School psychologist - Will grow by 11 percent between 2008 and 2018. Pays an average of $40,000 per year to more than $100,000 per year.
- Industrial or organizational psychologist - Will grow by 26 percent between 2008 and 2018. Pays an average salary of $102,570 per year.
- Substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselor - Will grow by 21 percent between 2008 and 2018. Pays an average salary of $40,420 per year.
- Mental health counselors - Will grow by 24 percent between 2008 and 2018. Pays a median salary of $36,810 per year.
- Marriage and family therapist - Will grow by 14 percent between 2008 and 2018. Pays a median salary of $44,590 per year.
