Click here) should see a little extra generosity this holiday season.
The
2011 American Red Cross Holiday Giving Poll found that a majority of Americans still want to donate to
charities this holiday season, despite the fact that many people are still unsure about the future of the nation's economy.
"Despite the difficult economy Americans want to give to help others in need," Gail J. McGovern, president and CEO of the America Red Cross, said in a statement. "With so many people out of work, they want to give something that means something.
Some highlights of the poll include:
- 57 percent of respondents plan to donate to charity between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
- Four in five Americans consider helping someone less fortunate an important part of their holiday tradition.
- Seven out of 10 people plan to donate an equal amount or more than they did last year.
- 36 percent of respondents don't plan to make a financial donation this
holiday season, and 49 percent of those say they can't afford it.
- 67 percent of people didn't think the economic downturn would last this long.
- 80 percent of Americans have similar or worse finances compared to last year.
- 68 percent of people think it's more important to make donations because of the economy.
- 55 percent of respondents feel bad about spending money on gifts people might not use.
- 79 percent of Americans would rather receive a charitable donation in their honor than receive a gift they won't use.
- 19 percent of people plan to donate blood this holiday season.
