Hundreds of Grocery Store Jobs Lost

Hundreds of grocery store jobs throughout Colorado will soon be eliminated.

Although SmartCo Foods just opened five grocery stores in Colorado earlier this year, the company is now planning to close all five of those stores, citing disappointing sales thus far. The California-based company is owned by Smart & Final Stores.

"Despite our best efforts, the level of sales achieved in the SmartCo Foods stores, after several months, did not meet our goals, and is not sufficient to sustain continued operations," Dave Hirz, president of Smart & Final Stores, said.

The company had initially planned to open another 20 to 25 stores throughout Colorado during the next few years. Each SmartCo Foods Store employs about 100 people, meaning about 500 workers will now lose their jobs, and thousands of potential jobs will never come to fruition. Employees who are affected by the store closures will have the opportunity to apply for positions at Smart & Final Stores locations in nearby states. Laid off employees also will be offered a severance package to help with their job losses.

Smart & Final Stores currently operates more than 280 stores throughout the nation, including stores under such name brands as: Smart & Final, Cash & Carry Smart Foodservice, Henry's Farmers Market, and Sun Harvest Markets.

Phoenix Jobs Moving to Mesa

One of the area's largest employers is moving several hundred Phoenix jobs.

Crescent Crown Distributing recently announced its plans to move the company's headquarters from Phoenix to a nearby suburb, creating hundreds of jobs in Mesa. The company hopes the new facility in Mesa will allow for better customer service and reduced drive time.

Crescent Crown, which distributes beer as well as non-alcoholic beverages, is planning to build a 305,000-square-foot plant on Broadway Road in Mesa, a project that is expected to cost about $30 million.

"The Broadway site is the ideal strategic location for delivery systems in the East Valley," Crescent Crown President James Moffett Jr. told The Arizona Republic. "The location offers our sales and operations personnel efficient access to three major arteries."

The company currently employs more than 600 people in the Phoenix area. Last year, 200 of those employees were moved to Surprise to be closer to the company's customers in the West Valley, and now the remaining 400 workers will be moved to Mesa

Crescent Crown Distributing serves more than 6,000 customers throughout Arizona, including restaurants, stores, bars, and other liquor-licensed venues. The company distributes several brands of domestic and imported beers, as well as non-alcoholic beverages like Welch's and Sunny Delight.

Mesa city officials are still working on a development agreement that would offer a government property lease-excise tax to Crescent Crown. However, the company claims it will still relocate to Mesa whether or not it's offered a tax break.

Austin Texas Jobs Among Top 10

Fundraising Jobs Popular Among Volunteers
